But new research challenges this assumption and suggests that the symptoms of menopause, at least in part, may begin in the brain.
This is because the hypothalamus, pituitary and stop responding to normal estrogen in some women, suggesting that they will develop a decreased sensitivity to estrogen, researchers at New Jersey Medical School report for December 22 / 29 Journal American Medical Association.
"This is an important new concept: Menopause is not just the ovaries, but also in the brain," said Laura Goldsmith, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and women's health, Faculty of Medicine of New Jersey, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
